All the quotes that Jesus uses to overcome Satan’s temptations are from the book of Deuteronomy. This shows that He was subjected to the same tests and temptations that faced the Chosen People on their way through the desert. Lack of bread, lust for power, and putting God to the test were the reasons for their subsequent rebellions. The Israelites succumbed to these temptations. Jesus overcomes them. Let us remember this when an enemy appears and he will deceive and tempt us.

Jesus, Son of God, I am nourished by Your word so that I may not be deceived by the prompting of an evil spirit. Like you, I want to persevere in faithfulness to the Father. Be with me, especially when I feel lonely in the desert.
